Expedia’s Annual Air Travel Hacks Report: 2023 Key Takeaways for Travelers

Expedia has released its annual Air Travel Hacks Report, which provides essential tips to save travelers time and money on flights.

As one of Expedia’s data partners, we provide insights powered by OAG Metis on capacity, flight cancellations and flights status data for flights originating in the U.S. Together, along with the Airline Reporting Corporation (ARC), the Air Travel Hacks Report helps travelers understand when to book and when to maximize loyalty perks ahead of this year’s busy holiday travel season.

In line with Expedia’s report, our own OAG research on traveler sentiment earlier this year indicates that many travelers have already expanded their travel plans and are eager to fly right now, despite higher costs and rising inflation.

According to our data, $50 and $100 ticket price increases aren’t likely to influence travelers’ purchasing decisions, whereas ticket price increases of $200+ are more likely to factor into their decisions. Additionally, our research shows that travelers want better booking data for their booking options.

Between navigating ticket prices and booking options, the following tips from this year’s Air Travel Hacks Report are more insightful than ever according to consumer demand:

  • Book flights on a Sunday to save up to 15%
  • Book at least a month before domestic flights and six months before international flights to save 10%
  • Depart before 3 p.m. to reduce the chance of flight cancellations
  • Depart on a Wednesday to save up to 15%
  • Plan using price alerts
