How much airline capacity is there in Europe This Month?

  • Overall airline capacity in the European market grew to 122.5m in January 2026, a 4.4% increase year-on-year.
  • International capacity grew by 5.9%, whilst domestic capacity contracted by 0.8% compared with January 2025.
  • Low-cost carrier capacity increased by 4.0% year-on-year, while mainline carriers grew by 4.6% and now account for 65% of total market capacity.

*As of July 2025, international capacity is reported on a two-way basis (previously one-way departing).

Which European Country Has The Most Airline Capacity (Domestic + International)?

  • The UK and Spain are the largest capacity markets, with 12.5 million and 12.2 million seats respectively. Capacity grew by 0.9% in the UK and 1.7% in Spain compared with January 2025.
  • Capacity once again grew fastest in Poland, increasing by 17.3% with an additional 397,000 seats.

Which European Country Has THE Most DOMESTIC Airline Capacity?

 

  • Türkiye and Spain are the largest domestic markets, with 4.8m seats and 4.1m seats respectively. Domestic capacity grew at the fastest rate in Türkiye, increasing by 6.3% compared with January 2025.
  • Italy saw the largest reduction in domestic capacity at 7%, followed by Spain, the UK and Norway, where capacity fell by 3.7%, 3.6% and 3% respectively.

Which is the Busiest Airport in Europe?

  • Istanbul is the busiest airport in Europe in January 2026 with 4.3m seats, an increase of 7% vs last year.
  • A close second, London Heathrow, grew by only 0.4% to 4.2m seats.
  • Strongest percentage growth in the Top 10 comes again from Istanbul's Sabiha Gokcen, where carriers have increased capacity by 13.4% year on year.

Which Region of Europe Has Most AIRLINE Capacity?

  • 70% of capacity is from or within Western Europe, growing by 2.9% vs last year to 85.5m seats.
  • Capacity in Eastern/Central Europe continues to grow at a faster rate of 7.6% to 16.4m seats.

Where do flights from Europe go?

  • The largest international market is intra-European travel, with 56.9 million seats in January 2026. This is an increase of 2.2 million seats year-on-year and represents 59% of the market.
  • The second and third largest international markets are the Middle East and Africa, with 10.7m and 9.3m seats respectively in January 2026.
  • Travel to/from the Middle East grew at the fastest rate this month by 13.4% vs last year, adding 1.3m seats.

Which is the biggest airline in Europe?

  • Ryanair is Europe’s largest airline in January 2026, with 13.4 million seats, up 2.1% year-on-year. It is operating 7.3 million more seats than Wizz Air, the second-largest carrier.
  • Wizz Air overtook easyJet as the second busiest carrier with 6.1m seats, adding 751k seats vs last year.
  • SAS Scandinavian recorded the largest percentage increase in capacity, up 19.2% year-on-year to 2.8 million seats. This was followed by Wizz Air and Turkish low-cost carrier Pegasus, with increases of 14.1% and 11.1% respectively.
