Eight of the Top 10 Busiest Domestic Airline Routes operate within Asia again this month. January sees two Jakarta routes back in the Top 10 (to Denpasar-Bali, and to Makassar), replacing Mumbai-Delhi and Guangzhou-Shanghai; thus, removing India from the Top 10, and leaving only two Chinese routes: between Shanghai and Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen. Three routes are Japanese domestic airline routes serving Tokyo and one route operates within South Korea. Saudi Arabian Jeddah-Riyadh route strengthens its place in the Top 10, and Australian Melbourne-Sydney slides down in the list with a 10% drop. If we were to look back to December 2019 (pre-pandemic) with the return of Jakarta-Denpasar this month, one significant route still missing is Vietnam’s biggest domestic route, operating between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
Beijing-Shanghai Hongqiao remains the busiest airline route in China’s domestic market this month despite a 9% drop. Just four of the busiest Chinese routes operate to and from Beijing, and Chengdu-Shenzhen climbs up in the top domestic airline routes in China with a 16% increase.
New York-Chicago takes the top spot in the US domestic market this month with a 21% increase, ahead of New York – Los Angeles and moving Atlanta-Orlando down to third place. Florida remains popular with four routes operating to and from there, but the popularity of Los Angeles slides with the Honolulu-Los Angeles and Dallas-Los Angeles moving off the Top 10, leaving two Los Angeles routes.
Dubai has kept its position as the world’s biggest international hub in January with four of the routes in the Top 10 International Routes, despite its operations to Kuwait and Karachi sliding off the Top 10 list this month. January 2022 Top 10 also sees the return of another Asian route, between Hong Kong and Taipei, and the moving up of Cairo and Riyadh in Africa-Middle East.
The busiest air routes are defined as those with the largest volume of scheduled airline seats in the current calendar month. Data is for flights in both directions on each route and is sourced from OAG Schedules Analyzer in the first week of each month. The data reflects the most recent full calendar month for the busiest scheduled domestic and international aviation routes in each category.
