The Top 10 Busiest Global Airports in the World are calculated using total airline capacity (domestic and international flights) and The Top 10 Busiest International Airports are calculated using international airline capacity.  The data is updated each month. 

Busiest Global Airport in the World - January 2022

In January 2022, Atlanta and Dubai keep their positions as the top 2 Busiest Global Airports in the World. However, we see the rankings of seven other airports being shuffled around; Tokyo moves up the most by three places to become global third ahead of Guangzhou and Dallas, and Delhi moves down to ninth place from its fifth position last month. Miami’s appearance in the Global Top 10 Busiest Airports last month has been short-lived, and it is now replaced by Jakarta in tenth place, ahead of its pre-pandemic fifteenth position in 2019.

Only six of the airports in the Top 10 this month were in the Top 10 in January 2019. Airports with big, open domestic markets, Dallas, Denver, Delhi and Jakarta gain a place in the top 10 as some of the big global airports of 2019, such as Beijing, London, Shanghai, Hong Kong slide down from their 2019 positions affected by travel restrictions. In fact, Guangzhou is the only Chinese airport left in the Top 10 this month.

Busiest International Airport in the World - January 2022

Dubai retains its position as the Busiest International Airport in the World this month, with almost 1.3m more seats than the next busiest, London Heathrow.

Apart from Istanbul, which now moves up to fourth place, ahead of Paris, all of the Top 10 International airports maintain their positions. There are still 6 European, 2 Middle Eastern and 2 North American airports in the Top 10 this month. Miami keeps its place as the second USA airport after replacing Dublin, last month.

The rankings are based on scheduled capacity in the current month, and compared to the equivalent month in 2019, pre-pandemic. The Top 10 Busiest Airports in the World are calculated using total capacity (domestic and international) and The Top 10 Busiest International Airports are calculated using international seats only.

Flights

The rankings are based on scheduled frequency in the current month, and compared to the equivalent month in 2019, pre pandemic. The Top 10 Busiest Airports in the World are calculated using total frequency (domestic and international) and The Top 10 Busiest International Airports are calculated using international frequency only.
