With 13,610,228 flights in total to the end of this week, the average number of commercial flights per day is 97,215.

WHICH IS THE Biggest AIRLINE IN THE WORLD THIS MONTH?

  • Carriers adding the most frequency this month are American Airlines, with 22,200 additional flights, Ryanair with an additional 9.400 flights and Indigo with an increase of over 6,000 flights.
  • There is growth too from the other US majors, with Delta and United both growing by over 4% this month when compared to last May. Alaska Airlines is also adding frequency, with 7.7%, or 2,700 more flights this month.  
  • Southwest and JetBlue on the other hand are static in the case of Southwest, with no growth this month, whilst JetBlue have contracted, reducing flights by 9.2% compared to last May.    
  • The largest reduction is from Turkish Airlines, who have reduced frequency this month by 24%.

 

TOP TWENTY COUNTRY PAIRS FOR TRAVEL | MAY 2024


 

WHICH TWO COUNTRIES VISIT EACH OTHER MOST?

  • As we have moved into the summer months, Spain-UK remains the largest country pair in the world, and is likely to remain so for the rest of the summer season, with 5m seats this month, and an increase of 9.6% on last May, strong growth in what is a mature market.
  • The second biggest country pair has just over 1m fewer seats, Mexico-USA where capacity will reach 3.9m seats this month, up 7.5% on last May.
  • Strong recovery is evident this month in some of China's key international markets such as Japan, Thailand and South Korea, with capacity increases of between 65-160% compared to last year.
  • Turkiye continues to experience strong growth too, with double digit growth recorded to the UK, Russian Federation, and Germany this month.

 

DOMESTIC MARKETS | MAY 2024


 

WHERE IS MOST DOMESTIC CAPACITY THIS MONTH?

  • Capacity growth across the world's largest domestic markets is mixed this month. Brazil and Mexico are seeing capacity contract by 2.1% and 5% respectively compared to May 2023, whilst India records strong growth once again, up 10.3% based on last May.
  • India is now the third largest domestic market in the world, although it now has the largest domestic population.
  • The USA also records strong growth this month in the domestic market, with an increase of 5.7%, equivalent to 4.8m more seats, and Spain also is growing strongly this month, with an increase of 4.9% in capacity.

WHICH WORLD REGION HAS MOST FLIGHT CAPACITY?


  • Global capacity will increase to 507 million this month, an increase of 7.0% on May 2023 and continuing the trend of recent months.
  • Most regions continue to see growth this month with the largest volume increases taking place in Europe, where the build up toward the peak summer period sees carriers adding 8.7m seats this month, compared to last May, an increase of 8.5%, whilst North East Asia also sees strong growth with 7m additional seats, equivalent to a 6.8% increase on May 2023.
  • Capacity growth appears to have stalled in Central America this month, and in Southern Africa where there is little or no growth.

All data is sourced from OAG Schedules and is for the current month and previous months stated per chart. Data is unadjusted for the leap year effect. 

The categories are defined below:

  1. The scheduled flight counter shows the number of flights in the schedule from the first day of the year up until the end of the current week.
  2. Weekly airline capacity shows total global (international + domestic) capacity, international capacity and domestic capacity, measure in seats. It is plotted weekly with a forward view of filed scheduled capacity for the 11 weeks ahead, showing the overall 3 months forward-looking position.
  3. Top 20 Airlines are the 20 largest global airlines by flights based on the current month.
  4. Top 20 Country Pairs are those international country pairs with most seat capacity based on the current month.
  5. Domestic Markets are the 10 largest markets by seats.
  6. Seats by Region is seat capacity for the current month to, from and within each global sub region.
