  • South East Asia total airline capacity in April 2024 is 38.3m seats, which is just 9.8% below where it was in April 2019.
  • Domestic capacity accounts for 59% of all seats this month, while international capacity makes up the remaining 41% of seats.
  • International capacity is now recovering vs 2023, growing by 20% relative to April 23.
  • Total seat capacity in the region has increased by 12% in April 24 compared with April 23.

  • Overall seat capacity in South East Asia still remains 10% lower than in 2019.
  • Indonesia remains the largest country by seat capacity in the region, with 11.9m seats and accounts for 31% of the region's air capacity.
  • Thailand is second largest with 6.9m seats in April 24 and accounts for 18% of the region's capacity.
  • Daily capacity increased by 23% in Indonesia and 16% in Malaysia vs the previous month.

  • The top domestic route in SE Asia remains Hanoi (HAN) to Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) with 843,000 seats, a daily capacity increase of 5% compared to March 24.
  • Daily capacity increased most on the Jakarta to Makassar (CGK-UPG) route, increasing by 25% in April 24. It increased by 19% on both the Surabaya to Makassar route (SUB-UPG) and Jakarta to Denpasar route (CGK-DPS).
  • Five of the Top 10 domestic routes in the region are internal Indonesian flights, Jakarta (CGK) to Makassar (UPG) is the largest of these with 576,600 seats.

  • Singapore continues to be a key International hub in SE Asia with 6 of the Top 10 international routes in the region starting or ending there.
  • The top 3 international routes remain between Singapore and other major regional hub airports - Kuala Lumpur (KUL), Jakarta (CGK) and  Bangkok (BKK).
  • Kuala Lumpur (KUL) to Singapore (SIN) remains the busiest route with 445,200 seats this month, a daily increase of 15% on last month. 
  • Daily capacity also grew by 14% on the Bangkok (BKK) to Hong Kong (HKG) route.

TOP 10 FASTEST CHANGING AIRPORTS BY INTERNATIONAL SEATS

  • The Top 10 airports in SE Asia remain unchanged in April 24 and make up 59% of all capacity.
  • Jakarta is the largest airport by capacity in SE Asia this month with 3.3m seats, only 34,600 more seats than Singapore which moved into second position.
  • Daily capacity increased by 10% across the whole region - the biggest increases percentage-wise were at Makassar, increasing by 29%, and Kuala Lumpur increasing by 15% vs the previous month.
  • International capacity increased most in Kuala Lumpur this month, with 127,800 seats added in April 24 v's last month. 
  • Percentage wise capacity grew most at Padang, Indonesia, increasing by 19% vs the previous month.

Top 10 Airlines by seats added month-on-month.

  • Lion Air remains SE Asia's largest carrier by seat volume, with 3.4m seats.  Lion Air's capacity is now 14% higher than in April 2019.
  • AirAsia is the second-largest carrier, with 2.5m seats, however, capacity is 22% lower than in April 2019.
  • Batik Air and Singapore Airlines are exceeding 2019 levels by 31% and 20% this month.
  • Lion Air has added the most number of seats this month adding 740,000 seats, a monthly increase of 28%.
  • Percentage-wise, PT Super Air Jet increased the most, with a 51% monthly increase.
