GLOBAL TOP 10 BUSIEST DOMESTIC AIRLINE ROUTES

KEY POINTS

  • Capacity globally for March 2023 is 14% higher than February 2023, however if we adjust February to be 31 days and then compare month-on-month the increase is 3%. 
  • In March 2023 Jeju (CJU) - Seoul (GMP) continues to be the busiest domestic route with 1.2 million seats, but has seen a capacity decrease of 2% this month compared to last month when using 31 days for February (adjusted). Hanoi (HAN) to Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) remains in 2nd place with 1 million seats and a capacity decrease of 3% (February adjusted). Sapporo New Chitose (CTS) – Tokyo Haneda (HND) is in 3rd place with 999,656 seats.
  • Beijing (PEK) – Shanghai (SHA) has had the biggest capacity increase this month compared to February (adjusted) with 14% more seats and is in 6th place.
  • Guangzhou (CAN) – Shanghai (SHA) and Shanghai (SHA) – Shenzhen (SZX) have both moved up into the domestic top 10 in 8th and 10 place. Jakarta (CGK) – Denpasar (DPS) and Mumbai (BOM) – Delhi (DEL) have dropped out of the top 10 this month. 

CHINA'S TOP 10 BUSIEST DOMESTIC AIRLINE ROUTES

KEY POINTS

  • Beijing (PEK) – Shanghai (SHA) remains the busiest domestic route in China for March 2023 with 755,061 seats and capacity has increased by 14% compared to February 2023 (adjusted).
  • Guangzhou (CAN) – Shanghai (SHA) has moved up 1 place into 2nd with 649,607 seats and a capacity increase of 21% compared to February 2023 (adjusted). Shanghai (SHA) – Shenzhen (SZX) has moved down one place to 3rd, with 622,785 seats.
  • Hangzhou (HGH) – Shenzhen (SZX) has had the biggest capacity increase in March 2023 compared to February 2023 (adjusted) with 24% and has moved up 1 place to 6th place.
  • Guangzhou (CAN) – Beijing (PEK) and Beijing Daxing (PKX) – Shenzhen (SZX) have both moved up into the top 10 busiest domestic routes in China in 9th and 10th place. Chongqing (CKG) – Shenzhen (SZX) and Guangzhou (CAN) – Chengdu (CTU) have both dropped out of the top 10. 

USA'S TOP 10 BUSIEST DOMESTIC AIRLINE ROUTES

KEY POINTS

  • Honolulu (HNL) – Kahului (OGG) is the busiest route in the USA domestic market with 313,910 seats and a 6% increase in seats compared to February 2023 (adjusted). This is the biggest capacity increase in the USA domestic top 10 this month compared to last month.
  • Atlanta (ATL) – Orlando (MCO) has moved up 1 place to 2nd place with 302,423 seats and a capacity increase of 3% compared to last month (adjusted).
  • Las Vegas (LAS) – Los Angeles (LAX) has dropped 2 places into 3rd place with 296,895 seats with a capacity decrease of -4% compared to last month (adjusted).
  • Newark (EWR) – Orlando (MCO) has dropped out of the top 10 this month and Atlanta (ATL) – Tampa (TPA) has moved up into 10th place.  

BUSIEST INTERNATIONAL AIRLINE ROUTES - MARCH 2023


KEY POINTS

  • The busiest international route for March 2023 continues to be Kuala Lumpur (KUL) – Singapore Changi (SIN) with 402,786 seats and a capacity increase of 4% compared to February 2023 (adjusted).
  • Cairo (CAI) – Jeddah (JED) continues in 2nd place with 395,801 seats and a 12% increase in capacity compared to last month (adjusted).
  • Incheon (ICN) – Tokyo Narita (NRT) has moved up 3 places to be the 3rd busiest international route with a capacity increase of 10% compared to February 2023 (adjusted).
  • Bangkok (BKK) – Incheon (ICN) has had the biggest capacity decrease this month dropping -9% and has moved down 5 places to be in 10th place in the international top 10.
  • Hong Kong (HKG) – Taipei (TPE) and Stockholm (ARN) – Copenhagen (CPH) have moved up into the top 10 this month in 8th and 9th place. Dubai (DXB) – Jeddah (JED) and Bangkok (BKK) – Singapore (SIN) have dropped out of the top 10 this month.    
  • Most routes in the international top 10 are in Asia Pacific and the Middle East regions with a small number in Africa, Europe and North America. 6 of the top 10 routes are within Asia Pacific region.

METHODOLOGY


The busiest flight routes in the world are defined as those with the largest volume of scheduled airline seats in the current calendar month. Data is for flights in both directions on each route and is sourced from OAG Schedules Analyzer in the first week of each month. The flight data reflects the most recent full calendar month for the busiest scheduled domestic and international flight routes in each category.
