AFRAA'S Story

The African Airlines Association (AFRAA) is the African continent’s leading airline trade association, representing over 45 member airlines and more than 85% of intra-African traffic. Founded in 1968, AFRAA drives the sustainable development of air transport in Africa by providing strategic support, industry intelligence, and advocacy.

Based in Nairobi, Kenya, AFRAA delivers data-rich publications and performance benchmarks and fosters collaboration across the aviation ecosystem. Through research, policy influence, and capacity building, AFRAA plays a significant role in shaping Africa's more connected, competitive, and resilient aviation industry.

The Challenge

With over 45 members across Africa’s aviation ecosystem, AFRAA encountered several challenges in providing comprehensive, timely, and data-driven insights to its expanding membership base.

AFRAA had to rely on limited data sources, requiring teams to extract and clean information from various data sources manually. Inconsistent formats caused extensive delays and made benchmarking across timeframes and regions slow and difficult. This significantly impacted the organisation’s ability to generate timely insights and high-quality publications for its members, including monthly updates, quarterly analyses, and annual reviews. Without comprehensive data sources, providing clear, actionable intelligence to support members in understanding the broader aviation landscape across Africa and beyond was increasingly challenging.

Data Intelligence is a core pillar of AFRAA’s strategic plan, so access to trustworthy data via a powerful, unified solution became critical. AFRAA required a robust data platform to enable real-time performance tracking, streamline its reporting workflows, and provide its members with credible, comparable, and actionable insights.

AFRAA needed a more efficient way to generate high-quality, consistent data outputs to serve stakeholders, including regulators, policymakers, infrastructure providers, and industry partners.

The Solution

Partnering with OAG, AFRAA integrated Analyser to access Schedules, Traffic, Connections, and Mapper modules, transforming how the organization collects, analyzes, and communicates data to its members.

The key to AFRAA’s monthly industry affairs reports and annual reviews is the Schedules Analyser, which enables the team to monitor flight frequency, market share, and capacity changes over time. This supports data-led publications and policy positions, providing a consistent source of truth for stakeholders.
Powered by Metis, OAG’s cloud platform, Schedules Analyser provides the most trusted schedule data on the market. With the freshest airline frequency and capacity insights available, it is customizable and versatile, and provides the most accurate aviation data to benefit network planning and predict shifting demand.

AFRAA uses the Traffic Analyser to assess passenger demand and market dynamics. By identifying flow patterns and volume shifts, AFRAA can now help members contextualize their decisions with real demand metrics, ensuring that strategic planning is powered by the most trusted and highest-quality aviation insights available.
With Traffic Analyser, users can understand where air passenger traffic originates, connects, and ends. Traffic Analyser unlocks access to six comprehensive and powerful reports:
  • Origin and Destination Report
  • Segment and Load Factor Report
  • Power Table Report
  • Mix Report
  • Connections Report
  • Top X Report
Connections Analyser has become essential in identifying gaps, highlighting opportunities, and fostering collaboration among member stakeholders.
Used to assess regional and international connectivity, Connections Analyser enables AFRAA to track and benchmark the effectiveness of network connections across African hubs and international gateways.
With Connections Analyser, AFRAA has gained access to dynamic visuals of all possible global flight connections across every airline, as they occur, and in real-time. Teams can monitor performance and evaluate routes, using the Quality of Service Index (QSI), to analyze how airline service changes impact connections at any airport across the world with Connections Analyser.

Visual storytelling is critical for AFRAA’s communications. With Mapper, the team creates intuitive, regionally segmented route maps that support strategic dialogues, member briefings, and external advocacy efforts. The visuals help explain complex connectivity issues in a format accessible to various audiences.
Mapper Analyser is OAG’s intuitive flight route mapper that enables users to build the highest-quality and most customizable flight route maps. From highlighting new commercial opportunities to visualizing your network and future connectivity to plotting unserved routes filtered by specific airports and airlines, Mapper equips you with the tools to create customized, exportable, and on-brand maps that bring your business case to life.

Using the Schedules, Traffic, Connections, and Mapper Modules together, AFRAA can now offer a data-rich experience to every member, reinforcing its position as a thought leader and delivering credible, real-time industry analysis.

The results

Since adopting OAG’s Analyser suite, AFRAA has seen a significant improvement in the speed, quality, and impact of its data work. Before implementing Analyser, reports would take four full days to compile using scattered sources. With Analyser, the team can generate comprehensive outputs within hours, accelerating turnaround for key publications and enabling faster engagement with members.

AFRAA now provides consistent analysis across Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), ranging from market trends and capacity fluctuations to network connectivity. These insights feed into AFRAA’s monthly updates, quarterly publications, Annual Publications and reports, policy briefs, and regional workshops - helping members benchmark themselves against the wider industry and stay informed of continental trends.

Analyser has also enabled AFRAA to become a more effective provider of strategic insight -- turning data into actionable outputs for advocacy, decision-making, and partnership building. Internal workflows have improved, with streamlined report generation, centralized access, and precise segmentation by region or theme.

Equally important has been the lift in member engagement. The enhanced reports and visualizations have driven higher participation in AFRAA events, increased interest in data briefings, and opened new opportunities for collaboration across the aviation value chain.

The association has strengthened its role as a trusted data authority within the African aviation ecosystem. In partnership with OAG, AFRAA continues delivering high-value insights supporting its members and fostering growth, connectivity, partnerships, and sustainable development across Africa.
