China Eastern Airlines' capacity increased by 2.2% in 2025, fuelled by international capacity growth of 13.5%, while domestic capacity only grew by 0.1%.
- The largest international market for the airline in 2025 was Japan with 2.4 million seats, representing 27% growth on 2024 levels.
- Compared to pre-Covid 2019 capacity levels, China Eastern increased capacity to the Middle East by 155% and to Europe by 77%. For the Middle East this is equivalent to 96,000 additional seats which came from the carrier’s new Shanghai – Abu Dhabi service and increased weekly frequency on the Shanghai- Riyadh route; growing from two flights per week when it launched in 2024 to six flights per week in 2025.
- However, capacity to North America fell by 75% vs. 2019 as bilateral constraints impacted services.
- Shanghai is the main focus market for the airline, with its two largest airports for capacity being Shanghai Pudong with nearly 15 million seats followed by Shanghai Hongqiao with 11.2 million seats.
