February’s on-time performance (OTP) results once again reflect the importance placed on this metric by airlines around the world with five airlines achieving an OTP of more than 90%:
- Safair 96%
- Aeromexico 93%
- Copa Airlines 93%
- Iberia 92%
- Austrian Airlines 91%
OTP highlights:
- Amongst the global airlines 22 reported no cancellations in the month with IndiGo leading the way having operated nearly 63,000 flights without one cancellation, a remarkable level of reliability.
- Safair, the South African regional airline, holds on to first place with an OTP rate of 95.82% reporting only two cancellations in the month despite a challenging operating environment in the market with shortages of ATC controllers and navigation support at some airports.
- There has been some change this month amongst the top five global airlines with both Aeromexico (#2) and Austrian Airlines (#5) improving their OTP at the expense of the two Japanese airlines - Fuji Dreams (#8) and Star Flyer (#12).
- Amongst the large airlines (operating 20,000+ flights in the month) British Airways were the best performing carrier with an OTP rate of 86.95%. A significant improvement on their OTP from January (77.38%) and the airline also cancelled fewer flights in February than January with 154 flights affected in the month vs 456 in January.
- The operational challenges of February and severe weather were very noticeable this month in North America:
- American Airlines cancelled 4,413 flights (2.66% of all those scheduled) and achieved an OTP of 75.85%
- Air Canada cancelled 2,348 flights (8.36% of all those scheduled) and had an OTP of 55.34%.
