BUSIEST GLOBAL AIRPORTS IN THE WORLD | APRIL 2024


KEY POINTS

  • Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL) remains the Busiest Airport Globally in April 2024 with 5.2 million seats, 3% more seats per day than last month.
  • Dubai International Airport (DXB) is in second place with 4.9 million seats.
  • Tokyo International Airport (HND) remains in third place with 4.5 million seats.
  • Istanbul Airport (IST) will see the biggest increase in seats per day this month compared to last month as the IATA Summer Season begins, with an increase of 10% in capacity which moves the airport from eleventh place up to sixth.
  • Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) has also had a large increase in seats per day with the season change, adding 7%, which moves the airport from being the twelfth busiest global airport to ninth.
  • Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) and Delhi Airport (DEL) have both dropped out of the top 10 this month.
  • In the Top 10 Busiest Global Airports there is only one airport which is in the top 10 in April 2024 that wasn’t last year; Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) which is in tenth place and was in 29th place in April 2023.  

BUSIEST INTERNATIONAL AIRPORTS IN THE WORLD | APRIL 2024


KEY POINTS

  • Dubai International Airport (DXB) remains the World’s Busiest International Airport in April 2024 with 4.9 million seats.
  • London Heathrow Airport (LHR) is in second place with 4 million international seats, 22% lower than Dubai International (DXB).
  • Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) remains third, having moved up to this place last month, with 3.3 million seats.
  • Amsterdam Airport (AMS) has moved up one place to fourth with an increase in seats per day of 7%. There are only 5,000 seats between third and fourth place.
  • Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) has had the biggest increase in seats per day this month compared to last month adding 9% more and is the sixth busiest international airport.
  • Istanbul Airport (IST) and Frankfurt International Airport (FRA) have also seen large increases in seats per day adding 8% and 7% respectively and are now in seventh and eighth place.

BUSIEST EUROPEAN AIRPORTS IN THE WORLD | APRIL 2024

  • In April 2024, the top 10 busiest airports in Europe are all the same as March 2023 with the same ranking.
  • London Heathrow Airport (LHR) remains Europe’s Busiest Airport with 4.3 million seats, a 3% increase in capacity compared to March 2024.
  • Istanbul Airport (IST) is the second busiest airport with 4.0 million seats.
  • Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) is in third place with 3.5 million seats.
  • April marks the start of the IATA Summer Season for 2024 and some airports in Europe have seen big increases in seats per day compared to March 2024 as they move into the peak season.
  • Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO) has had the biggest increase in seats per day adding 20% more this month compared to last month and is now in eighth place. 
  • Barcelona Airport (BCN), Munich International Airport (MUC) and London Gatwick Airport (LGW) have all seen strong growth in seats per day too adding 14%, 13% and 12% respectively and are in seventh, ninth and tenth places.

The rankings are based on scheduled capacity in the current month and compared to the equivalent month in 2023. The Top 10 Busiest Airports are calculated using total capacity (domestic and international) and The Top 10 Busiest International Airports are calculated using international seats only.
