The World's Busiest Airports... How does their air service compare?

This week I will be on the road, and I realized that I would be traveling through three of the busiest airport in the world.  I started thinking about how these airports compare in other air service categories as outlined below.  It’s amazing how different the airports are!

1. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) – 90,039,280 passengers
Average daily flights: 2,646
Domestic/international flight profile: 93 percent domestic and seven percent international
Airline profile: 20 airlines; Delta accounts for 74 percent; AirTran accounts for 17 percent
Nonstop destinations: 231

2. Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) – 69,353,654 passengers
Average daily flights: 2,225
Domestic/international flight profile: 89 percent domestic and 11 percent international
Airline profile: 32 airlines; United accounts for 49 percent; American accounts for 37 percent
Nonstop destinations: 191

3. London Heathrow Airport (LHR) – 67,056,228 passengers
Average daily flights: 1,304
Domestic/international flight profile: 12 percent domestic and 88 percent international
Airline profile: 87 airlines; British Airways accounts for 42 percent; bmi accounts for 11%
Nonstop destinations: 155

4. Tokyo Haneda International Airport (HND) – 66,735,857 passengers
Average daily flights: 952
Domestic/international flight profile: 97 percent domestic and three percent international
Airline profile: 10 airlines; All Nippon accounts for 47 percent; Japan Airlines accounts for 39%
Nonstop destinations: 52

5. Paris Charles de Gaulle International Airport (CDG) – 60,851,998 passengers
Average daily flights: 1,353
Domestic/international flight profile: Nine percent domestic and 91 percent international
Airline profile: 109 airlines; Air France accounts for 59 percent; Lufthansa accounts for five percent
Nonstop destinations: 243

6. Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) – 59,542,151 passengers
Average daily flights: 1,367
Domestic/international flight profile: 82 percent domestic and 18 percent international
Airline profile: 52 airlines; United accounts for 27 percent; American accounts for 18 percent
Nonstop destinations: 138

7. Dallas/Ft. Worth International Airport (DFW) – 57,069,331 passengers
Average daily flights: 1,678
Domestic/international flight profile: 93 percent domestic and 7 percent international
Airline profile: 19 airlines; American accounts for 86 percent; US Airways accounts for three percent
Nonstop destinations: 163

8. Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) – 55,662,256 passengers
Average daily flights: 1,272
Domestic/international flight profile: 86 percent domestic and 14 percent international
Airline profile: 63 airlines; Air China accounts for 43 percent; China Southern accounts for 16 percent
Nonstop destinations: 156

9. Frankfurt International Airport (FRA) – 53,467,450 passengers
Average daily flights: 1,194
Domestic/international flight profile: 14 percent domestic and 86 percent international
Airline profile: 102 airlines; Lufthansa accounts for 63 percent; Condor accounts for two percent
Nonstop destinations: 245

10. Denver International Airport (DEN) – 51,248,695 passengers  
Average daily flights: 1,590
Domestic/international flight profile: 96 percent international and four percent international
Airline profile: 20 airlines; United accounts for 47 percent; Frontier accounts for 20 percent
Nonstop destinations: 153
