Continental Airlines will launch a third daily non-stop flight between Heathrow and Newark Liberty International on October 26.

Subject to government and slot approval, Continental will on the same date discontinue flights from Gatwick Airport to both New York and Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport.

From Heathrow, Continental will continue to operate two daily flights to Houston in addition to three daily flights to New York Liberty.

“Our focus on Heathrow is a response to the changing realities of the marketplace,” said Jim Compton, Continental’s executive vice president marketing.

“Our customers have shown a clear preference for Heathrow, and our main competitors have focused their operations there. We regret the need to end year-round operations at Gatwick, but it is imperative that we remain competitive and continue to meet the needs of our customers.”

Continental’s Heathrow flights will go from Terminal 4 and will be operated using three aircraft types: the 285-seat Boeing 777-200, the 174-seat Boeing 767-200ER, and the 175-seat Boeing 757-200.

Continental will continue to operate non-stop services to New York Liberty from Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Manchester, as well as Dublin and Shannon.

In addition, Continental and Virgin Atlantic codeshare on several Virgin-operated flights from Heathrow and Gatwick.
