The Big 6-0 by Laura Jackson

May 27, 2009

This weekend I attended the sixtieth birthday for a colleague.  Turning 60 is a major milestone, and I started thinking about air service “sixties”…. What airports have air service levels that match this milestone?

60 Airlines
Only one airport in the world is served by exactly 60 airlines – Hong Kong (HKG).  Nearly 50 percent of Hong Kong’s total flights are on two hometown carriers – Cathay Pacific and Dragonair.  Combined, the remaining 58 carriers provide the balance of Hong Kong’s air service.  In total, Hong Kong’s 60 airlines provide nonstop service to 104 nonstop destinations around the world.

60 Nonstop Destinations
Only two airports in the world have nonstop service to exactly 60 destinations: Larnaca International Airport (LCA) in Cyprus and Luxembourg-Findel Airport (LUX) in Luxembourg.

Larnaca, Cyprus (LCA)
A total of 37 airlines provide service at Larnaca, with Cyprus Air providing over one-third of total flights.  Nearly 30 percent of nonstop service from Larnaca is bound for two destinations – the Greek cities of Athens and Thessaloniki.  Many of the destinations served nonstop from Larnaca are served only once per week.

Luxembourg (LUX)
Nearly three quarters of all flights at Luxembourg-Fidel are provided by Luxembourg-based Luxair; seven other airlines provide additional service.  London’s City Airport is the most popular destination for flights to/from Luxembourg, followed by the Germany cities of Saarbruecken and Frankfurt.

60 Daily Flights
With an average of 60.3 total daily flights, Hilo International Airport (ITO) on the island of Hawai’i best fits this category.  Four airlines – Hawaiian, Mesa, Mokulele and Island Air – provide these flights.  Passengers can reach four nonstop destinations from Hilo – Honolulu, Kahului (Maui), Kona and Lanai City.

60 Runways
Of course, there are no airports today with 60 runways!  But it’s certainly a nice thought.
