Measuring Carbon Footprints in the Air from BACK Aviation Solutions

BACK Aviation Solutions, a leader in providing strategic and technical consulting and data information services to the aviation industry, announced the release of their new Carbon Emissions Calculator. Developed in partnership with flight information and data solutions company OAG, the Carbon Emissions Calculator allows airlines to calculate their carbon footprints by equipment type, airline, airport, route, country or world region.
A "carbon footprint" is the amount of greenhouse gases (measured in units of CO2) released by an activity or entity such as airline flights. The objective of the Carbon Emissions Calculator is to give airline companies, airports, manufacturers, and regulators a tool to measure the impact of flight operations by day, week, month or year in a continuous time series.
"Understanding the starting point of greenhouse gas emissions is critical to the success of airlines’ short- and long-term environmental strategies” said John Weber, Managing Director OAG Data/BACK Aviation Services. “Although commercial aviation contributes less than 3% of greenhouse gases, every participant in the air transport business is going to want to do their part to reduce emissions, and this tool will allow carriers and industry planners to benchmark past and future performance to meet emissions control goals”.
The Carbon Emissions Calculator is accessible online 24/7; with results reported in a standard spreadsheet format that can be easily downloaded and integrated with existing desktop applications. Updated weekly, information is based on the formula developed by the U.K. Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), plus historical, current, and projected data from OAG airline schedules.
