OAG security Alert Fact Sheet 2: Data on Transatlantic Routes

11  August  2006

OAG SECURITY ALERT FACT SHEET #2:  Data on Transatlantic Routes

An estimated 7m transatlantic travellers will be impacted by delays and cancellations during August
if current levels of heightened security continue

Following yesterday’s airport security alert, OAG -  the global travel and transport information company which collates data from more than 1000 scheduled airlines on a daily basis – has provided some further statistics for media use.  These cover the expected impact on transatlantic flight operations in August with additional independent commentary on the issues of airport congestion and customer communications.

For the month of August 2006:

  • Five per cent (5%) increase in the volume of transatlantic flights and available seat capacity compared to the same month last year.
  • 27,600 flights scheduled between USA/Canada and Western Europe
  • Planned capacity on transatlantic flights will exceed 7m seats
  • There will be 7,600 flights and more than 2m seats between London’s Heathrow (LHR) & Gatwick (LGW) airports and North America.
  • Both Paris (CDG) and Frankfurt (FRA) airports will each offer more than 3,000 arrivals and departures and 800,000 seats on transatlantic flights.

Below are some tables of topical statistics from OAG’s database for media use.

These illustrate the planned frequency and capacity share of transatlantic flights for key European hubs by carrier region for the week commencing 14th August 2006 (i.e. European vs. N American or Asia Pacific airlines).

Commented Duncan Alexander, Managing Director Business Development at OAG:

“Airlines have made great strides in streamlining the check-in process, with self-service and e-ticketing now commonplace.  It is ironic, then, that this drive for efficiency has created an infrastructure that may have contributed to the congestion problems yesterday and today.

Check-in booths have been removed to make way for self-service terminals and e-ticketing is now commonplace. Yet there were banks of redundant self-service terminals with queues of people trying to check-in at far fewer manned booths than, say, a year ago.

At this stage, of course, we don’t know how long the ban on hand luggage will continue; but it is a risk that the very efficiencies put in place to benefit the traveller have the potential to drive people away from flying.

Unfortunately, there is no guarantee such security alerts won’t happen again and airlines need to adapt their customer communication strategies.  The need to take advantage of modern-day technologies such as email and SMS to communicate with their passengers about delays and cancellations in the event of any similar alert in the future.”

OAG provides the media with Quarterly Airline Traffic Statistics, a regular snapshot of airline activity around the world.
