OAG reveals the world's busiest routes

14  September  2006

  • Barcelona – Madrid tops the ‘World’s Busiest Route’ list
  • Asia dominates the rankings with 6 of the top 10 spots
  • Low Cost routes favour the US
  • Denver soars up the Low Cost route chart

The route between Barcelona and Madrid has topped the list of ‘world’s busiest routes’, edging up from second place this time last year. It knocks the Brazilian route between Sao Paulo Congonhas and Rio de Janeiro Santos Dumont off the top spot, based on the number of flights operating per week.

These statistics have been compiled by travel and transport information company OAG.  OAG collates data from more than 1000 airlines, on a daily basis, and tracks around 28 million departures a year.

For routes overall, the Asia region dominates with six of the top 10 busiest routes.  In comparison, North America dominates the top 10 for routes where low cost carriers operate, with seven of the top 10.

“It’s interesting to note there is very little movement year on year among the overall top 10 busiest routes, with Mumbai – Delhi the only ‘new entry’,” says Duncan Alexander, managing director of Business Development at OAG.

“The picture on low cost routes is somewhat more dynamic, showing three new routes with the highest weekly frequencies, two of which involve Denver Airport.”

Below are charts illustrating the year on year changes:
