There are several reasons why a business traveler does not follow the company's travel policy: - The traveler does not like the preferred airline. He may have a frequent flyer card for a different airline or may simply not like the food!
- The traveler prefers a different departure point. For example, a company's headquarters are in London and all flights are booked out of Heathrow, but one of their employees lives in Manchester, so prefers his nearest airport.
- A traveler may prefer different routes and transfer points. For instance, there are no direct flights between a company's offices in Madrid and Hong Kong, so they usually book flights with a transfer connection - a change of plane - at Heathrow. However, one traveler prefers Amsterdam where transfers are within one terminal.
- A travel arranger might find that a different airline offers cheaper fares than the company's preferred airline.
- A business traveler may want to use a different hotel chain because of facilities available - such as separate phone lines and power connections for modems in every bedroom, or an 18 hole golf course!
- A business traveler may want to use a different hotel because the location will be better for a specific trip. A traveler flying to Bangkok, for example, may want to stay at an airport hotel, rather than the usual downtown hotel close to the business district.
Where these changes are requested by the individual business traveler he may need to get approval/permission from his line manager.
