Fast Facts on the Government
Travel Market
- The government travel market is the single largest
spender of travel in the U.S. – 28 billion, resulting
in over 24 million room nights a year.
- Each day, over 93,000 government travelers are in
route to over 8,000 destinations. That’s over 3
million travelers per year.
- The U.S. Government requires all of their
sanctioned travelers to stay at overnight lodgings
that have predetermined room rates – called per diem
rates. (Every hotel must also meet fire and safety
requirements set by FEMA, the Federal Emergency
Management Agency.)
- The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA)
sets these per diem rates – adjusted annually, usually
in October – by location within the United States,
including Puerto Rico.
- If your hotel offers a free breakfast or any meal,
the government traveler will choose your hotel over
your competition. Government travelers are able to
pocket any remaining money of their meals and
incidentals allowance, but not money from a lower per
diem rate.
