Identify the average aircraft size on the LHR to DXB route by carrier.

Start setting up your query using the yellow query filters:

Departure Airport Code                    

DEPARTURE FROM folder
Arrival Airport Code     ARRIVAL TO folder
Passenger (excluding surface)    SERVICE folder
Operating Flights Only    CODE SHARE folder
Week Commencing Date(s)    PERIOD folder
Non-Stop Flights only ROUTING folder  

Now select the following fields as Results Objects.

Carrier Code

AIRLINE folder
Frequency   FREQUENCY & CAPACITY folder
Total Number of Seats   FREQUENCY & CAPACITY folder

Your screen should look like the image below (click on the chart to view a larger image)

Click on Run Query and select ‘LHR’ as your ‘Departure Airport Code(s)’ and ‘DXB’ as your ‘Arrival Airport code(s)’.  Select the week that you wish to run the analysis for, e.g. 2006-11-13.

Now click ‘OK’ to run the report.

The results of the query show the overall number of flights and total number of seats by airline offered from LHR to DXB for the week commencing 13th November 2006.

Follow the steps below to produce the variable that will show you the average aircraft size by airline.

Step 1 – Click on the ‘Show/Hide Variable Editor’.  This is positioned in the main toolbar and is displayed in the following format:

Step 2 – Once you click on this icon the ‘Variable’ and ‘Formula’ definition options will appear as shown in the image below: (click on the screenshot below to view larger image)

Step 3 – In the ‘Variable Definition’ option enter a name in the text box e.g. ‘Average Size’.  Then click on the measure (purple icon).

Step 4 – In the ‘Formula Definition’ option enter the following:

=[Total Number of Seats]/[Frequency]

Step 5 – Press ‘Save’ and then ‘Close’.

Now click on ‘Variables’, select the ‘Average Size’ measure (purple icon) you have just created.  Drag & drop this in your report.

Step 6 - Click within the ‘Average Size’ column.

Step 7 Now rank the data in descending order utilising the ‘Z-A’ sub option from the ‘AZ’ button on the top toolbar as shown in the image


The results of this analysis show that on average Emirates is offering the highest number of seats per flight (330.97), closely followed by Virgin Atlantic with 306 seats.

Should you wish to format the numbers not to show the two decimal places, right click within the ‘Average Size’ column and select ‘Format Number’. 

In the ‘Format Type’ option select ‘Custom’ and then from the ‘Properties’ option select  ‘#,’.  Now press ‘OK’.  To ensure that the above steps have been followed correctly, please view the image below.
